Update on Chopa's health situation
Currently Cholpon is at our partner organization's safe house. She is doing okay, although her foot hurts all the time and she is constantly in pain. She has an infection that has destroyed the whole layer of skin to the extent that one can see her bone, all the meat, blood and puss, it's a big area on the outer side of the foot. her foot is all grey and blue and yellow.
we talked to social worker who is taking care of Cholpon. The safe house is underfunded right now and they can't offer Chopa enough of food, besides healthy diet. She needs to eat well and not move her foot. She has seen doctor and there is an expensive injections she needs to receive twice a day during the ten days, along with the visits to medical centre for rebinding and cleansing.
We counted that ten day injection course will cost us 180 dollars, and ten days of cleansing and binding - 80 dollars and food - 35 dollars. We have currently fundraised enough to support this ten day course. However it is important to keep her diet healthy and wound clean - only this way we can ensure her getting better soon. It might take from two months to a year for infection to go. Currently we need to eradicate infection, so she can start healing, which won't be urgent and could facilitated without emergency fund.
Thank you very much for your donations! Cholpon is very precious member of our community and she is grateful for all the support and wishes you're giving her and LGBT people in Kyrgyzstan,

Labrys Emergency Fund: priorities this spring
Your donations have been an immense support to our community, we have our own safe space to work, gather, meet each other and build stronger community. This new online donation box is to support the refurbishing the house and to ensure urgent support to the people from our communities who face crisis situation.
Our house is large one-storey building with the garden. It is in good condition, utility system works well and it doesn't require refurbishing inside. However it is not secure, we need to establish alarm system, fence and better locks. So far it is a simple latch for the gatelock and short rare sticks tied together with the fire for the fence. Moreover, we have another two much smaller buildings in the yard. They both need to be fixed and could be used as storage space and resource center. The larger building has two small rooms and a wide roofed porch that coud be used for meetings in spring and summer time.
When Labrys team has met with the community members, tthe most need was identified to gather support for the emergency situations. So early in the year two people have faced major crisis, which are still happening. Young gay man was accused of selling pornography by the police and taken to court when he has denied to out other gay men for police to harass them, extort money and "eradicate all of them" as said by police. He was outed in derogatory and hateful way in the major kyrgyzstan newspaper. During these events, police has harassed his family and abused him physically causing long-healing bruises, internal injuries and concussion. His case is still going on, he needs major activist and financial support to go on. he is a brave young man who decided to stand up for his rights and never allow this happen to anyone from our community. We will update you more on his story.
Another emergency is the deteriorating health of our friend Cholpon, who is suffering harsh physical illness. She is need of medication, food and better professional care. Cholpon has no money as she is currently staying in bed all the time and can't work. Her sister can't finacially support her, they come from the rural area and have been orphans since early childhood. Our community members are trying hard to support Cholpon with food, warm company and basic meds. Unfortunately, we don't have enough funds to pay for her treatment.
Those two situations are the priority of our new emergency fund.
Please email us at kyrgyzlabrys@gmail.com to learn more about situation and to direct your donations for the particular cause.
We appreciate your support, thank you for always being there for us.
Sincerely yours, Labrys team

Labrys House Opening
We had two separate house openings to ensure safety and comfortable community celebration and to celebrate our new home with the partners and allies. Both times it has snowed right before the opening dates, but sun has always come up when it was time for us to celebrate. The community-only event was warm and fun. Many people came earlier to decorate the house (week before that, people were moving things, cleaning up and fixing the garden!) and cook. Aiman from the intiative group Indigo has cooked us big pot of our central asian traditional plov. We were suprised to see new faces : ) It was great to have a surprise visit from Renate Hartman, international coordinator from COC Netherlands. Jika Torobekova after inspiring thankful speech has offered Renate to cut the red ribbon and the house was opened officially. It was great to see how people are enjoying house and making plans on gardening, fixing and making it more homey.
Week later Labrys has hosted house warming event for our partners, friends and family members. It was great to see other community-based organizations who have been our support for many years, and ally experts from women's movement, civil society and care professionals. Our big kitchen was central, everyone found it cosy, different activists gathered around the table for toasts, wishes, memories and some debates too : )
We are looking forward the summer!

We have found the house! Thank you all!
This winter has been very busy and happy times for Labrys. With the support of over hundred people, Urgent Action Fund for Women's Rights and OSI LGBTI Rights Initiative, Labrys could match up the grant of our long-term partner COC-Netherlands. In February we have celebrated our Labrys birthday looking for the house, managing all the paper work and finally moving to the new place. What a wonderful feeling many couldn't describe: we have our own house, where we can feel safe and at home, and no one can evict us or harass us, we will stand strong and together. One of the most precious thing to Labrys staff and community members is to know that there are so many people and activists out there understanding and supporting our struggles. Our home is your home!
